Mucus produced in the nasal cavity is swept back into the throat by microscopic hair cells called Cilia. Cilia function to keep the sinuses and nasal cavity clean. Excessive mucus production can be caused by Nasal Allergy (Allergic Rhinitis), Irritant Sensitivity (Non-allergic Rhinitis) and Chronic Sinusitis.
Most persons who suffer from asthma hear wheezing sounds that occur when they breath out. Mild asthma does not always wheeze and can causes a cough (Cough-variant Asthma). If breathing tests are not performed, this problem will typically go undiagnosed.
Acid reflux commonly causes an acid taste in the mouth or a burning sensation in the chest however, reflux can cause other symptoms such as a chronic cough (Silent Reflux). If this issue is not identified, treatment of all other contributing factors will typically fail to improve the cough.
